Research on human health is one of the most critical aspects of modern medicine. The study of various biological markers and understanding their role in human diseases greatly contribute to the development of early diagnosis and effective treatment methods. One of these markers is alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). AFP is a protein normally produced by the liver and yolk sac during fetal development and usually decreases to low levels after birth. However, in the presence of certain diseases, particularly liver cancer and certain testicular cancers, AFP levels can be abnormally high in adults.[1]
